NAR’s 2020 Home Buyer and Seller Generational Trends showed that millennials have common home-buying preferences with those in the silent generation. The study examined the similarities and differences between recent home buyers and home sellers belonging to millennials (aged 22 to 29) and the silent generation (aged 74 to 94).

Despite the huge gap in the two age groups, the report indicates that both groups are like-minded when it comes to home buying preferences, with proximity to family and friends (53 percent) as the top factor that influences their neighborhood selection. This result was expected for the silent generation, but NAR was surprised about the result for millennials.

The NAR report also showed that millennials and silent generation home buyers will most likely decide to purchase newly constructed homes because of the amenities. Again, NAR said this is normal for older generations but represents a new trend for younger generations.
